Kamnik Slovenia

The Municipality of Kamnik is in the northern part of central Slovenia, between the Gorenjska plateau and the Celje Basin, at the foot of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps and not far from the capital, Ljubljana. The medieval town of Kamnik is the county’s centre and is rich in history and cultural heritage. Numerous cultural and other events enliven the old town centre throughout the year and attract visitors from all over Slovenia. The town and its surroundings offer many opportunities for recreation and sports, making leisure time more enjoyable. The extensive forests nearby provide plenty of clean air and create a wonderful setting for relaxation and outdoor activities. When in Kamnik, there are several points of interest for visitors, such as the Franciscan monastery. It holds an impressive library of 10,000 volumes, including manuscripts and incunabula (among them an original copy of the Bible translated into Slovene by Jurij Dalmatin in 1584). Next door is the Church of St James, dating from 1695, and just beside the main altar is the tent‑like Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, designed in 1952 by Jože Plečnik and filled with symbols relating to Christ and Christianity. The church and chapel are usually open daily. A stroll along the main Šutna Street feels like stepping back in time: pretty pastel‑coloured houses in a neat row, with many traditional guild and craft signs. In the centre of Šutna stands the Church of the Immaculate Conception, built in the mid‑18th century, with a separate Gothic spire. From near the central Glavni trg, you can climb the steps up Mali Grad hill to enjoy superb views from the “balcony of Kamnik”, where red rooftops are set against a dramatic mountain backdrop. In summer, you can visit the remarkable Romanesque chapel here, decorated with 15th‑century frescoes and Gothic stone reliefs. Around 6km south of Kamnik lies Volčji Potok, Slovenia’s largest and most enchanting garden. This 80‑hectare arboretum is home to more than 2500 varieties of trees, shrubs and flowers from around the world. A small tip: spring is a riot of colour.
