Kamnik Slovenia

The Municipality of Kamnik is in the northern part of central Slovenia, between the Gorenjska plain and the Celje basin, at the foot of the Kamnik–Savinja Alps and not far from the capital, Ljubljana. The medieval town of Kamnik is the municipal center and is rich in history and cultural heritage. Numerous cultural and other events enliven the old town center throughout the year and attract visitors from all over Slovenia. The town and its surroundings offer many opportunities for recreation and sports activities, making leisure time more enjoyable. Vast nearby forests provide plenty of clean air and create a wonderful environment for recreation and relaxation. In Kamnik there are several points of interest for visitors, such as the Franciscan Monastery, which has a rich 10,000-volume library of manuscripts and incunabula (including an original copy of the Bible translated into Slovene by Jurij Dalmatin in 1584). Next door is the 1695 Church of St. James, and just off the main altar is the tent‑like Chapel of the Holy Sepulchre, designed by Jože Plečnik in 1952 and full of symbols relating to Christ and Christianity. The church and chapel are usually open daily. A walk along Šutna Street is a trip back in time: pretty, pastel‑colored houses stand in a row, decorated with many old guild and craft signs. In the center of Šutna stands the Church of the Immaculate Conception (built in the mid‑18th century), with a detached Gothic spire. From near the central Glavni trg you can climb the steps up Mali Grad hill to enjoy fantastic panoramas from the “balcony of Kamnik,” with red rooftops against a mountain backdrop. In summer you can visit the remarkable Romanesque chapel here, with its 15th‑century frescoes and Gothic stone reliefs. About 6 km south of Kamnik is Volčji Potok, Slovenia’s largest and most beautiful garden. This 80‑hectare arboretum has more than 2500 varieties of trees, shrubs and flowers from all over the world—and in spring it bursts into color.
